In a previous post I talked about "The Stoke" ... What does it mean to feel stoked?
The Stoke is a natural high you get when you perform certain wind and water sports. While the stoke has typically been associated with Surfing I have seen a similar effect overcome sailors and kiteboarders. When you do these sports, when you are in harmony with the natural energies of wind and water, you begin to feel this euphoric high. Nothing else compares with it. All natural. Naturally pure. The Hawaiians call it the spirit of "Aloha". In Costa Rica it is called "Pura Vida". Surfers call it "being stoked". I call it being in harmony with the universe and feeding your soul.
Energy is constantly permeating our lives. most of the times it flows right through us. Think of the feeling on a hot summer night when you close your eyes and feel a warm breeze on your skin. The sensation is mesmerizing. And that is just standing still letting the energy wash through you and over you. When you ride waves or wind you are actually travelling with that energy and the feeling is magnified. Ask anyone who has experienced this and if they can quantify it they will tell you the same thing.
This is the stoke. Stoking the fires that feed your spirit.
Step Into Liquid is a movie about the joy of surfing. It captures the essence of the stoke and helps explain why people love waves and water. But be warned.... once you watch this movie you will feel a thirst and desire to go surfing, kiteboarding, sailing, anything that brings you in harmony with this feeling.
Here is an iTunes link to this movie:
The movie features footage from all over the world, from Great lakes surfing in Michigan, to the world famous Banzai Pipeline. It is the penultimate feel good movie for anyone who has always wanted to learn what surfing is about. But be forewarned, "once the bug bites you, you can never go back".
The film also has a great soundtrack. The iTunes link to the soundtrack is below, but for now please enjoy one of my favourite songs on it that perfectly resonates the visceral feeling of being Stoked. The feeling of riding waves. The feeling of sailing a boat and riding the wind with nothing but the sounds and splashes of water around you. Say no to Diesel fumes. Say no to engine noises. Say yes to wind, water, sun and fun. And above all... Step Into Liquid.
