I, like you I'm sure, enjoy those cool motivational memes and expressions that keep you going when it seems all you do is work all day waiting for the weekend to arrive so you can get your laundry, shopping and other chores done. I suppose in a way that makes those precious few moments we have to do our own thing that much more sacred, beautiful and special. But let's face it, life isn't a bed of roses (a strange expression when you think rosesbeds have thorns ... or maybe it's appropro)
I used to work a stressful day job in IT, and I use the term "day" loosely as days and nights would bleed into one grayish slurry of vibrating pagers and email alert notifications alert. On my 15 minute lunch hours I would draw designs for inflatable catamarans and kites and watch youtube videos of DIY RV builders and dream of "possibilities". I loved videos like Steve Job's Stanford commencement address and quoted then future president Donald Trump as he "pontificated" about doing what you love and being persistent when chasing your dreams, but a small part deep down inside of me used to think "Sure Steve Jobs, I'd love to run Apple and create cool technology that changes the world" and "sure Donald Trump, I'd love to build beautiful skyscrapers and innovative architecture and stunning golf courses in great cities and places around the world" -- but that's not the hand of cards I was dealt.
But I continued to save up and focus as much on possible on avoiding negativity and doing what you love and learning to love what you do. Through a video montage of changing seasons and weathering every storm at sea my dreams slowly started to take shape. I found great brands like Tiwal, MiniCat, SmartKat, X-Cat and others and started this humble little business as a side project. I loved to sail and windsurf and kayak and pretty much anything to do with water but living in a condo who has room for such fanciful toys. Even if you owned a house you couldn't store a boat on your driveway anymore! So the notion of high quality and ultra portable gear echoed through my mind ... and i knew inflatable was the answer. And I knew if I was patient and showed off the possibilities to others that word would spread. And slowly and surely it has.
Today so many people have discovered the of sports like sailing and kitebaording and paddling and have reaped the rewards of inflatable gear. And as I've grown I've continued to partner with great brands like Torqeedo and Sea Eagle and Eleveight and RRD and Clearit and way too many to mention. While we are growing I also wouldn't say we've "made it". We still have a long way to go as a business and long days and nights seem the norm ... I still too often than not stare out my window at the sailboats in the distance and still those moments are precious and few and far between BUT in doing this business I have reaped an unbeknownst reward.
When someone buys a sailboat they are making one of their dreams come true and it's such a good feeling to hear the amazing stories they share back with me. A friend in Florida who teaches kiteboarding and I used to say how you can only experience the joy of learning to kite once, but when you teach someone to kite you get to share in that joy with them. If you could see the look on someone's face when they get their first ride it is so incredibly rewarding and intrinsically satisfying. I'm really bad at remembering my camera and recording some of these precious first steps. It is something I hope to be better at but at the same time I love when my amazing customers send me pics, videos and emails about the fun they are having. I love hearing how someone can't wait to take their wife and kids out on the boat and teach them to sail. It is rewarding beyond the ability of emotionally choked words to describe.
And while I may not be rich like Donald Trump or Steve Jobs ... and while i still work way more than a human should ... wow is it ever amazing to know so many people are benefiting from what you do. And the relationships you form with not only such great customers but also with your suppliers and partners and the people you meet out there ... it is a benefit I was not expecting from this business which has now become my full time passionate pursuit.
Anyways the point of this blog post was not just to say thanks but maybe to swallow some of my pride and say that maybe, just maybe, Steve Jobs and Donald Trump were right ... you should follow your dreams and do what you love. And even though I work now more than ever I think my "job" just might also be more "rewarding" than ever ... ok not financially but certainly spiritually and intrinsically. And while we may not be ending war or famine surely maybe you can positively impact the world by one smile at a time.
I've had the joy of teaching so many people to kite and sail over the years and sharing in this aquatic adventure with others of like mind and spirit and I can't wait to continue this journey and show even more people these wonderful activities and help condo dwelling closet sailors and water sports enthusiasts achieve their dreams.
This is a big week. The MiniCat regatta kicks off in Italy, Eleveight is about to launch their new lineup, summer is about to begin in the great white north and so many new found friends are beginning their journey into kiting and sailing and more. I can't wait for others to join in this journey and share in this feeling for this is truly nothing better than time spent on the water.
