For as long as I can remember I've always loved designing things. Whether it was building new spaceships and submarines using Lego or sketching solar cars when I should have been taking notes in class. I've always believed things could be done better. No detail and no nuance was too small. The things I used to imagine while lying in bed at night waiting for sleep to come were how I would design the bridge of the enterprise for optimal efficiency. Does this sound like you?
When I was young I built a ski-bike and a snow board before Snow Boards were even something known about. When i use to fly power kites and stunt kites I would try and figure out how to make them water re-launchable using inflatable technology... clearly I was not alone as the sport of Kiteboarding is proof. I used to try and figure out f=how to make flat rigid inflatables, and low and behold others were too, so now we have drop stitch inflatables.
Fast forward to not that long ago... I wanted to design high performance, ultra portable, inflatable sailboats. As I started to research materials and prepare designs I found a couple of other great companies had designed something very similar to what I would have made anyways... so rather than go through the hassle of designing, prototyping and building, I decided to contact these companies to try and bring their products to Canada. Here I am today fortunate enough to be distributing MiniCAT and TIWAL high performance inflatable sailboats in Canada.
But my passion for design does not end here. I am always looking for advanced new products and technology to either design and build myself or to bring to the Canadian consumer.
Sailing and sailboats have always been a passion of mine, but building them is not an easy task. In the area of rigid hull sailboats I think there are a few fascinating future technologies. One of them is Hydro Foils which I will write about in future posts.
The other technology is what I call "Dynamic Keel" technology. Shifting the weight of your balast/keel has many advantages in designing a sailboat. Then one day i stumbled upon this video....
I really like this guy, Vlad Murnikov. He built a sailboat in his apartment in Russia and today he has designed what I think is a great boat. It has a flying keel that dynamically adjusts to provide optimum sailing performance. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. And I hope it inspires you and others to pursue your dreams of designing things better than we have today.
In future posts I will talk about the designers that built the Tiwal and MiniCAT, two of the very best high performance and super portable inflatable sailboats in the world! And the two boats/companies which I am lucky enough to be partnered with to bring this technology and these boats to Canada. But for now enjoy some Carbon Fibre boat lust...
