We believe the future of water sports is inflatable.
Inflatable boats are tougher than rigid boats like fiberglass and carbon and in the rare case that they do get damaged they are repaired in minutes with a patch and glue. Try that with those other materials. Now there are rigid boats made of plastic, which is much tougher, but also much heavier and impossible to repair. We don't dislike rigid boats ... we love all boats and they each have a specific purpose or use, but we LOVE inflatables.
Besides being super tough and durable, inflatables are easy to transport so you can load them into your truck and never worry about a trailer to tow them. Since there is no trailer you can sail them anywhere, not just places with a boat ramp. Assembly takes much less than an hour and disassembly is done in minutes. When comparing that with trailer loading and unloading and we would rather spend more time sailing and less time rigging.
Inflatable sailboats are very easy to sail by someone just learning, but experienced sailors can also push them hard. They are also many times lighter than rigid boats so you can right them without worry should you capsize which makes them great for kids and lighter sailors. They are also much more comfortable and you end up with less bruises than a solid hulled boat.
Mystic Point Water Sports was founded with a vision that sailing and other water sports should be accessible to all and inflatable sailboats help make that vision a reality. Over the years we have become known as Canada's best and in some cases only source for quality inflatables. We are your go to trusted source for accurate information to help you choose the right boat for your needs.
For many years we focused on MiniCat which has become the biggest selling Inflatable Catamaran sailboat in the world, but now we are please to bring you some of the other brands that are out there. So today we would like to introduce SmartKat. We are the only ones in Canada to offer you the SmartKat but that doesn't mean we can't provide one to our American and International friends. If you are not from Canada don't hesitate to reach out to us. For some reason, foreign orders are tax exempt and you get to shop in the ridiculously undervalued Canadian dollar. We aren't able to sell all our brands to foreign customers, but we can with SmartKat!
This boat was designed and engineered in Germany and is currently built in Austria. It features larger diameter hulls than a MiniCat so it sits a little higher off the water, but the trade off there is in a small increase in weight. SmartKats on average weigh roughly between 45 and 50 kg, MiniCats have alot of models which range from 25 to 58 kg, but the fairest comparison is probably with the 420 which weighs about 44 kg. The biggest take away here though is that both are light and easy to sail and easy to right.
SmartKats also come in 2 bags and the setup time is very similar to a MiniCat. The MiniCat, like most sailboats, uses a sail with an internal rope that feeds through a channel whereas the SmartKat mainsail wraps around the outside of a mast more like a windsurfer or an XCAT. All of which have jib furlers.
The SmartKat has a trapeze wire, same as the MiniCat, but they offer a tiller extension so the skipper can get out on the wire, whereas the MiniCat does not ... but you can DIY your own tiller extension on the MiniCat. Both are built exceptionally well and the quality and engineering that goes into them is noticeable from a mile away.
The most noticeable difference between the two is how they handle lateral resistance. SmartKat uses a retractable centerboard instead whereas MiniCats use fins on the hulls. Both of these result in faster turning and easier tacking than a rigid hulled boat like a Hobie where the entire length of the hull provides lateral resistance which can result in stalled tacks and be more difficult to tack for novice sailors.
It's hard to say which system is "better" between the MiniCat and SmartKat systems and i'm sure this is something that can be debated endlessly. Both turn easy and point well ... I would think the MiniCat can point a couple degrees higher and the SmartKat can turn microscopically faster but I will need to spend many enjoyable hours on the water testing both. One day I hope to also see which one sails faster but i can't see there being much difference either way.
The SmartKat is rated for higher wind. Their mainsail areas are 5.9 and 6.2 M squared depeding on the model whereas MiniCat 460 main sail has an area of 8.0 M Squared and a 420 has a 6.5 M squared area ... so higher wind rating also means smaller sail ... so you could argue that the MiniCat is better in lighter winds, especially the 460.
The MiniCat comes in 4 categories
The SmartKat comes in 3 categories:
Both brands offer lots of great accessories (we may not have them all up in our store at time of writing so please ask us if you don't see one you want).
Wow this will be a tough choice for anyone looking for a new boat! It's a good thing I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. I'd say choose the one that fits the wind range you most plan to sail in and is the appropriate size for you and what you want to do. And then let's get out there and race our boats!
I am just happy we can provide such great brands for such cool sports and help people to realize their sailing dreams. Now you can own a sailboat that fits in your condo closet! How cool is that? But I must warn you, wherever you go people will be asking you about your new inflatable sailboat. The attention it can draw comes with the territory I suppose.
Feel free to reach out with any questions you have about any of the brands we carry or sports we endorse. We are still building out some nice info pages on our website and working to add all the accessories to our store, but in the mean time you can shop for a SmartKat by clicking the button below.

I, like you I'm sure, enjoy those cool motivational memes and expressions that keep you going when it seems all you do is work all day waiting for the weekend to arrive so you can get your laundry, shopping and other chores done. I suppose in a way that makes those precious few moments we have to do our own thing that much more sacred, beautiful and special. But let's face it, life isn't a bed of roses (a strange expression when you think rosesbeds have thorns ... or maybe it's appropro)
When I see this I hear Morgan Freeman's voice saying, "Some bird's aren't meant to be caged" and I think - some waves ARE meant to be ridden ... like a gift from GOD left under the tree of your soul ... waiting for you to wake up on Christmas morning, tear the wrapping off, wax your board and jump right in.
OK I know I'm mixing in way too many references but my mind is scrambled after seeing this video ... I mean holy shit did you see that wave?
I used to dream of riding Banzai Pipeline but let's face it ... not only is that the most territorial wave on the planet ... but the amount of training and surfing you have to do to be good enough to ride there is off the charts and sadly was probably not meant for a guy who grew up in the surfing mecca known as Toronto. But this wave, this looks totally rideable ... and oh what a ride it looks to be. Ive never see anything like it.
Make room on the bucket list for this one.
Oh and that song: dream haunting or what?

And how cool is this ... the reverse angle!! Awesome!!
I love the look of gratitude in this guy's face ... i think he knows he scored something special ... and the story of the hurdles he encountered to get there ... well its analogous to life and the journey we take in general ... so cool to see it all work out ... anyways this next one is like "the Making Of Video:
$3,000 for a 20 sec barrel ... im sure he is thinking "totally worth it!"
It's that time of year again when MiniCat owners, dealers, friends and fans journey to beautiful Lake Como, Italy for a weekend regatta full of fun events, prizes and shenanigans. From June 29th to July 1st participants will sail this incredible place where people like George Clooney have bought a house. As usual the incomparable Laura Dekker will be there as well. We could not go this year but if you would ever like to go just contact us and we will try and get you a spot.
Our goal is to have enough MiniCat owners and sailors in Canada and North America to host our own events. Maybe the food will not be as good as that created by a chef in Italy but what's wrong with a little outdoor BBQ next to a beautiful Canadian Lake? And we are close to achieving this critical mass. Customers all across Canada and the U.S. are discovering the benefits of "the world's favorite portable sailboat."
Who needs a trailer, you can pack your cat in your trunk or stow it on the roof and take it anywhere. You can sail your cat anywhere too ... even lakes that do not allow motors or beaches that do not have boat ramps. In my opinion, going to the beach is about more than just sitting in the sun all day and drinking. It's about getting in the water and riding the wind and the waves and feeling that exhilaration that only comes from catamaran sailing. You can grab a boat and jump on board with your friends, family, dog or lover and have a great time .. or you can go it alone and feel the incredible satisfaction of being out there on your own.
We work hard and I can think if no better way to enjoy those precious few moments of summer away from the office than getting out on the water. We've lowered the prices on MiniCats to the lowest they have ever been and they will not go lower so now is the perfect time to take the plunge, figuratively and literally, and get yourself that personal portable sailboat you've been dreaming of. We've also moved away from having sales so you know the price you pay is the best and you will never have to stress wondering if there is a better deal around the corner. All sails and no sales is our motto.
We know it's a big purchase but this is something that will last forever and is basically free from here on in. Compare sailing to skiing -- the gear itself isn't cheap but then you need to travel to the hills and buy lift tickets and meals and more. Now compare this to sailing where you can sail for free and have a picnic on the beach ... what could be better than that.
And if you don't know how to sail, don't let that stop you ... we will show you how. We've trained with Ontario Sailing and have been teaching people to sail for years and it's a lot easier than you realize. MiniCat is also much easier to sail and maneuver than and big bulkie Hobie Catamarans.
July 1st is not just the event in Lake Como but also Canada Day ... wouldn't it be nice to take a MiniCat with you to this weekend?
Thanks for reading and have a safe long weekend everyone ... don't drinbk and boat and always wear a life jacket. Until next time remember to:

2019 Eleveight GEAR is HERE!
Well Almost & Sort Of ... The official release date is early July but we've got the lowdown on all the new gear straight from the testers in Tarifa and it looks amazing. Eleveight is continuing to tear up the industry by setting a new standard for quality and performance. Never before has a new company had such an impact since Horacio Pagani shook up the Super Car industry or since Ferruccio Lamborghini told Ferrari to F-Off and built his own car.
As many of you know, some of the brightest minds from Best Kiteboarding left to start their own brand ... but this isn't Best 2.0 - Eleveight is something completely new. The problem with existing brands is you can't change too much form year to year or you run the risk of pissing off your existing customer base. The result is they end up with kites that are behind the design curve in terms of both performance and handling characteristics. So they try and innovate by introducing all these additional product lines but those too are handicapped because they don't want to cannibalize their existing lines - what a mess.
Apple, in its Steve Jobs era heydey was an example of a company that didn't care about cannibalizing itself and they pushed the limits of design resulting in things like the iPhone, the iPad and the multi-touch interface ... imagine if Apple had been afraid to cannibalize the scroll wheel ipod and never released multi-touch?
Do you also remember when Apple bought NEXT and not long thereafter released OS-X ... that was the start of something completely new. Now imagine being able to start fresh in the kiteboarding industry with all new designs using the best ideas form some of the brightest minds and not having to hold onto any outdated legacy product lines - well that's what Eleveight has done - they built a new brand incorporating all the best ideas without any limitations. And oh what a brand it is...
If you haven't tried an Eleveight kite yet you don't know what you are missing. This is perhaps the fastest growing brand in Kiteboarding history and for good reason. The line up is clean and un-cluttered and their products are exceptional in both performance and quality. Now they are entering their 2nd year with only subtle refinements. These include the use of what is widely considered to be the best material in the in the industry: Teijin Techno Force X4, for their canopies which will help prevent tears and reduce canopy stretch and trailing edge flutter to unprecedented levels.
They have also made subtle refinements to wind range and turning characteristics without loosing any of the incredible boosting and stability of the current line up. Their bar has retained the amazing click to reconnect safety system and added the ability to adjust bar width among a few other refinements. In fact Ozone has already copied their quick re-connect chicken loop system - when was the last time you saw one of the oldest brands in the industry copying one of the newest? (Ask Lamborghini, Pagani, Tesla, Koenigsegg and McLaren about that.) But let's face it, click to re-connect is a great idea and I wish all brands used this same system, that way fewer riders would fear pulling their safety knowing it is one click away from re-connecting. I've discussed this same issue with other kiteboarding instructors and we all feel that too many riders are afraid to use their safety and I think this system would help remedy that.
Eleveight's excellence is not just limited to the kites ... have you tried the Process board? OK while I love the naming convention Eleveight has adopted for it's other products, I think this board deserves a better name than that, but name aside it is the best all rounder I have ridden to date... and Ive had the pleasure of riding some great boards over the years. The Process board in my opinion is like the Heinz of Ketchup.
What do I mean by that?
Well, have you ever read Malcolm Gladwell's piece on why we have so many brands and types of Mustard yet Heinz nearly completely dominates the ketchup industry? It's a brilliant piece which you can read here: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004/09/06/the-ketchup-conundrum. Or you can watch the TED talk here: www.ted.com/talks/malcolm_gladwell_on_spaghetti_sauce.
One of the possible reasons Gladwell attributes to this "ketchup conundrum" is that perhaps Heinz has created the perfect product with just the right ratios of ingredients to make the ultimate universally loved ketchup?
Well my kiteboarding compatriots -- I tell you this in all sincerity: Perhaps Eleveight has created the Heinz ketchup of kiteboards - the perfect all round board in what I wish was better named; the Process. It is such an exquisite all rounder that does everything well and has no weaknesses. It doesn't have the best pop, but it is very, very good. It points super high and carves really well ... but best of all it is exceptionally smooth and comfortable and eats chop like a kid pouring Heinz ketchup on their fries.
Never before have I felt a board so easy on these old knees and spine that I don't think I will ever get rid of this old philly. It was love at first ride and she's with me for life ... and thankfully, Eleveight has made no change to the dimensions, construction or characteristics of this board whatsoever ... they've just given her a fresh coat of paint and she looks great in the new shade of blue which I have to say is a step up from the previously unassuming grey. Ok so maybe i'll get the blue one instead ;)
Now don't get me wrong - I'm not proposing you only own one board ... changing your board changes the complete feel of kiting and I think its great to have a quiver of different boards to keep things fresh and interesting. But if you could own a Ferrari AND a Lamborghini AND a Pagani, wouldn't you? So why not own a few boards? After all it's not like you can have several wives (unless you live in Utah) or several super cars (unless you are RIchard Branson - that private Island owning, super model riding on his back, son of a bitch who has never once invited me to hang out with him like he did with Barrack Obama) ... but ... you can own several different kiteboards - so why not.
Anyways, we are so stoked to try the new gear ourselves but at the same time we don't want to give up any of our existing gear we love so much. What a dilemma... But in the end we have to make some room for what's coming so this is your chance to get some existing demo gear at great prices. To Shop our demo department click here:
